The Shag Haircut

Shag is the classic haircut of the ’70s and considered one of the ‘coolest’. Paul McGregor had invented the Shag hairstyle and gave it to Jane Fonda in the movie Klute which became one of the most requested styles. Famous celebrities like Florence Henderson, Farrah Fawcett and David Bowie all once sported this haircut style and made it the hairstyle of that era. Though not as popular as before, the style is still preferred by some people today. Alexa Chung is one of the celebrities who love to wear a shag haircut.

Unlike most layered haircuts, a shag haircut basically has short layers beginning at the crown rather than at a longer length, which gives the style a shaggy appearance. It is best for thin, wavy hair as it adds body and dimension to the hair. It works on all length of hair and looks great on almost all face shapes.  It’s also a great way for both women and men wanting to grow out their shorter hair, adding texture without compromise of style.

Short Shag

Are you tired of taking care of your long tresses? If yes, you could style your hair in a short shaggy hairdo. These short haircuts will certainly make you look younger and will surely make heads turn. Layering is a very important aspect of a short shag haircut. The beauty of this hairstyle lies in layering your hair in a manner so as to frame your face in the best possible way. Short shag hairdos also include pixie haircuts and short layered bob hairstyles. In case of pixie haircuts, hair at the back is cut very short. Choppy side swept bangs makes this haircut look very interesting. A lot of layering is done at the top and front, whereas hair at the back doesn’t have many layers. This kind of layering creates volume at the crown.

Medium Hair

Girls with medium length hair can go in for medium shag layered hairstyles. Medium hair can give you the option of trying out various layers. If you are looking to increase the volume of the hair, you can go in for layers. On the other hand, if you have thick hair and wish to achieve a slightly toned-down look, you can opt for lesser layers.

Long Shag

If you have long tresses, there is a need to go easy on layering. A long shag never goes beyond 3 layers. Though shag is not a preferred hairstyle for very long tresses, if you are keen to style your long hair in a shag, you could cut the front section of your hair into blunt bangs. Cutting 2-3 layers along with bold hair color highlights can certainly jazz up your look. You will need to get your hair trimmed every 3-4 weeks in order to maintain this style. Styling products such as gels will also be required to maintain these trendy haircuts.

The shag haircut is relatively easy to maintain. It is the type of haircut style that allows you to brush and go. Ideal for busy women who want a sexy, modern look but are pressed for time.
