The Chic Kinky Twists Hair

The kinky twist is a braided hairstyle that combines twisting and curling with hair extensions. They are popular among many African American women who desire a hairstyle that looks more natural. Kinky twists can be done in many different lengths and styled to be curly, wavy, or straight. The Kinky twist size ranges from 2 mm to 4mm and could be till the chin or the shoulders. The ends are normally curly and are dipped in hot water. These twists also give a fuller look, which can be appealing to women with thin hair.

There are some different kinds of Kinky twists, such as; two strand twists, Senegalese twists, rope twists and Nubian twists.

Two Strand Twists

To create a two strand twist — a staple kinky twist style — you must first have kinky hair or use a kinky hair weave. Twist the hair by dividing a section of hair into two sections, then overlapping a section over the other section. You could curl two strand twists at the ends using rollers.

Senegalese Twists

Senegalese twists involve more than just overlapping two sections over the other sections. To create Senegalese twists, first divide your hair into a small square section, then divide the section into two. Twist each section, in the same direction, four to five times with a tight grip, then cross the sections over each other till you reach the ends. Senegalese twists resemble a neat, tight, two-stranded rope. You have the option of sealing the ends by burning them with a lighter, or curling them using rollers.

Rope Twists

You can do rope twists by using the same methods as Senegalese twists — the only difference is in the twisting. Unlike Senegalese twists, rope twists are twisted less tightly and are twisted in opposite directions. Also each section is twisted once before overlapping them. This method produces two-stranded ropelike twists that are a bit looser than Senegalese twists but neat.

Nubian Twists

To get Nubian twists, tightly twist two sections in opposite directions, three to four times, while crossing the right section over the left section. Nubian twists and rope twists may look alike but you’ll see a difference in the twisted strands. Because of the extra twisting involved before crossing each section, your Nubian twists may appear thinner than a rope twist.

How to Create Kinky Twits?

Things that Needed

  • 2 bags, Kinky or Afro texture hair extensions
  • Shampoo with conditioner
  • Cold-wave rods
  • Spray bottle
  • Towels
  • Boiling water
  • Cup or bowl
  • Blow-dryer

 The Instructions

  1. Wash your hair the day before you plan to do kinky twists. This removes excess oil so the extensions won’t slip off.
  2. Grab a small section of your hair, near the ear, with your fingers.
  3. Divide the hair into two parts. Place the hair extension on top of the two parts and twist your hair and the extension together by placing them between the thumb and index finger.
  4. Firmly hold your hair and the extension together and wrap the two strands, left over right, until you reach the end of the hair extension.
  5. Repeat steps two through five until you have twisted all of your hair.
  6. Roll the ends of your kinky twist by placing several twists on a cold-wave rod.
  7. Pour boiling water into a wide-mouth cup or bowl.
  8. Cover your upper body with thick towels to prevent hot water from dripping directly onto you.
  9. Dip the rod with the twists into the boiling water for 3-5 seconds.
  10. Remove the twists from the water and immediately blot them dry with a towel.
  11. Spray warm water over the hair. This helps the twists to set and not unravel.

Although kinky twists do not require excessive hair care, minimal care is necessary in order to keep hair healthy. Use a moisturising shampoo specifically designed for this hairstyle once a week. Be sure to tie your hair down with a silk scarf every evening before bed. With proper hair care, the twist style can last up to three months. The Kinky twists are a low maintenance style for black hair.
